History in Leeuwarden
The historic city centre of Leeuwarden breathes history. In 1435, the three mounds Oldehove, Nijehove and Hoek were merged into Leeuwarden, which also received city rights that year. The city was loved by the Oranje Nassau’s and was court of Friesland from 1584 to 1747. If you walk through the cozy old city centre, you will come across one striking building after another. Walk the same halls as the royal family, climb a castle that is almost 500 years old or learn more about the life of Mata Hari.

Inclusive Leeuwarden - everyone is welcome!
We are currently working hard to map as many accessible places as possible. Leeuwarden is a beautiful city with a historic centre, interesting museums and nice cafes. There is plenty to see and experience! But how do you get to the most beautiful sights if you have difficulty walking? How do you participate in a tour if you are visually or hearing impaired? Where can you easily enter with a wheelchair or mobility scooter? And where can you find gender-neutral toilets?
We do our best to answer as many of these questions as possible, because everyone is welcome in Leeuwarden! Do you have a good tip for us, a question, are you missing certain information? Please feel free to send an email to marketing@leeuwarden.nl.
