Leeuwarden is a beautiful city with a historic centre, interesting museums and nice cafes. There is plenty to see and experience! But how do you get to the most beautiful sights if you are in a wheelchair? Don't worry, we have planned a weekend in Leeuwarden for you with accessible restaurants, wheelchair-friendly places and tours that will delight you. This way everyone can enjoy a weekend in our city without any worries!
10:00 am - Arrival
10:30 am - culture immersion
Fries Museum
The Fries Museum is located on Wilhelminaplein, also popularly known as Zaailand. The impressive museum is about 5 minutes from Central Station. Are you parked in the Zaailand car park? Then you can take the lift to the museum. Easy! Get to know the mysterious Mata Hari: dive into her diary and discover her sad fate as a possible double agent. Fight the 16th-century rebel Grutte Pier against the Dutch or fall prey to his huge sword if you can't say ‘bûter brea and griene tsiis’ (butter, bread and green cheese). Feel like the king or queen of Friesland for a moment with the sparkling gold and silver from the mounds. Or enjoy work by (world) famous artists and slow design by leading designers - tough and durable, with an eye for tradition and craftsmanship. In the Fries Verzetsmuseum (resistance museum), located inside the Fries Museum. You will get to know starving children who were brought to the Friesian countryside to recuperate.
The Frisian Museum is equipped with an elevator, accessible toilets, and you can also borrow a wheelchair at the entrance.

12:30 pm - lazy lunch
Café Thús
Seeing beautiful things requires energy, so time for a nice lunch! From the Fries Museum, you can easily slide into Café Thús. This nice establishment is located on the ground floor of the museum. Besides the best coffee with traditional Frysk pastries (oranjekoek, anyone?), you can also have a delicious lunch there.
There are no thresholds in Café Thús. A disabled toilet is available.

02:00 pm - city tour
A Guide to Leeuwarden
On weekends, you can join a city tour by A Guide to Leeuwarden at 12:00 and 14:00. The city guides know everything about the city: from major events in Leeuwarden's history (such as the beer revolt!) to where the members of the royal family stayed. Leeuwarden is built on mounds, so there is some difference in height here and there: like little hills. The routes you can follow with the guide are free of major obstacles. Here and there may be a threshold, of course, but the guides can help where necessary. Thus, they try to keep their tours as wheelchair-friendly as possible! The tours can be followed with a ‘pay what you want/can’ principle. After the tour, you give the guide what you thought it was worth.

Irish conviviality
After the city tour, take a look at Leeuwarden's one and only Irish Pub: Paddy O'Ryan! Of course, a good glass of Guinness and a good appetizer plate are not to be missed here. Not a Guinness fan? No worries, of course they also have other delicious drinks: from soda to tea and from wine to (specialty) beer, plenty of choice. Paddy O'Ryan has two entrances and there is some height difference in the middle area. The staff can help you.
There is a disabled toilet at the back of the café.

Natuurmuseum Fryslân
After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, you're ready to hit the road. At Natuurmuseum Fryslân, (nature museum), you'll feast your eyes! Get to know Friesland under water - without getting wet yourself! - at the OnderWaterSafari (underwater safari), listen to the story of the giant sperm whale skeleton and marvel at the most extraordinary discoveries during expeditions. Did you know that Natuurmuseum Fryslân is housed in a former orphanage? Go back in time in the old classroom and see how children used to be taught.
The Nature Museum Fryslân has a lift that goes to every floor of the building. Only the exhibition about the Dragon - an exhibition where children aged 4-8 can be guided around - is not accessible by wheelchair or mobility scooter. Two (paid) parking spaces for people with disabled parking cards have been created in front of the museum. There is also a special entrance for people in wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
