Leeuwarden loves vintage!
Vintage freaks beware, Leeuwarden is bursting with cool vintage shops. From bedazzled Y2k jeans to funky seventies jumpsuits and from top brand two-chances to pre-loved retro furniture - you'll find it all in the heart of the city. So you'll score a great new fit and be kind to your wallet too.
We've got the Y2K bug going hard. Trousers are getting big, bigger, biggest again and skirts short, shorter, shortest again. We are not afraid of a glitter here or there and even denim on denim is a big ‘yes’ again. The Y2K Valhalla is the Wardrobe, which is full of pre-pre-loved gems. On Nieuwestad, the longest shopping street in the city centre, Kledingkast cannot be missed. So go!
OK, you've got vintage and you've got vintage. If you can't get enough of the taste of the past - of heavy leather jackets, popping fabrics or old, colourful jumpers full of stories, then don't miss these shops.
The Plek Vintage
When you think vintage, you think De Plek. Here, you'll find everything your sneaker heart desires: cowboy boots, band shirts, overalls, all the accessories you could want and a good story. De Plek is on the Oude Oosterstraat, in the city's oldest shop. So this 16th-century building has long had a sweet spot of shoppers, with at least one special visitor. Well-known philosopher Descartes stayed in the house with den gladden façade for a period around 1885. Makes you think, right?
Nozem en de Non
If we had a time machine, we'd fly straight to the 70s or 90s for a good outfit. But we don't have one, so we head to Nozem en de Non, which has one of the best vintage collections in town. In the cosy historical building in the Sint Jacobstraat, the shelves are full of gems and you're also at the right place for interior items from another era.
Designed for Maria
If we had that time machine, we would step in, dial in any year between 1920 and 1950 and step out at Designed for Maria. This shop has everything your heart desires when it comes to midcentury vintage. Owner Githe has a penchant for rock 'n roll clothing, and it shows. And, bonus: in the same premises you'll find The House of Vintage. With that name, no further explanation is needed, right?
Bring it & buy - A good trade
Regverdig
Some people dress so cute, you want to shop the clothes from their closet. Well, you can! Regverdig sells the most beautiful items from other people's wardrobes. You can bring in your own clothes and after a quality and freshness check, Julia and her colleagues will hang them in the shop for you. This keeps the collection surprising and versatile all year round. Featuring uncontested vintage and your favourites brands, as well as the previous collection of major fashion chains, you'll find them at Regverdig.
Over & Weer
Over & Weer also has beautiful pre-loved items, brought in by individuals. Here, too, quality prevails, so don't be surprised to find a genuine Burberry or YSL. Over & Weer sells mainly mid- and high-end designer clothing.
Madelief
The buying and selling system of these clothes shops is a true happiness for buyer and seller. It is also an incredibly sustainable way of shopping. The quirky shop Madelief calls it a fair shopping alternative. Madelief sells hip, modern and high-quality women's clothing from the better brands. Make your way through the city's most beautiful historic streets to the shop, which is located on the Vijzelstraat - a street with a high boutique density and therefore definitely worth a visit.
Apple & Ei
Where the Kelders and Voorstreek used to be the main streets to find second-hand treasures, the vintage bug is now flying in all directions. Appel & Ei, like the Wardrobe, is located on the atmospheric Nieuwestad. So now, in addition to the big fashion chains and stylish clothing boutiques, you will also find a diverse range of second-hand clothing shops on the main shopping street. Do you know Appel & Ei yet? Appel & Ei does what the shops above also do, but on a larger scale. The shop can be found in 21 other cities besides Leeuwarden!
