11fountains Harlingen

Sight

Once upon a time, Harlingen was dominated by whaling. Nowadays, we no longer strive to kill these grand animals, but rather to save them from death, and especially as they are increasingly stranded in shallow waters for unclear reasons. The fountain of Harlingen is a lifelike sperm whale. It lies as if stranded near the Zuiderpier, but occasionally its powerful jet of water betrays the notion that it is indeed alive. Thus, 'The Whale' testifies to the enormous influence humans have on everything that lives in the sea.

This fountain is part of the 11fountains: eleven fountains in the eleven Frisian cities, designed by eleven artists from eleven different countries. 11fountains is an international art project for Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018, Cultural Capital of Europe, conceived and curated by Anna Tilroe.
