11fountains Workum

Sight

For centuries, the town coat of arms on ‘De Waag’ in Workum's has been supported by two lions. They look naive and their theatrical pose stimulates laughter. But as the fountain of Workum, firmly anchored on the ground and larger-than-life in size, they are no longer minor characters, but protagonists. Some distance apart, they now spray water at each other like fighting cats. 'Look at Workum,' they seem to be shouting at us, because without the coat of arms, the empty space between them suddenly offers a view of the living reality of the city.

This fountain is part of the 11fountains: eleven fountains in the eleven Frisian cities, designed by eleven artists from eleven different countries. 11Fountains is an international art project for Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018, Cultural Capital of Europe, conceived and curated by Anna Tilroe.
