‘Woke’ in Friesland - a philosophical exploration

Lecture/Debate

Tuesday 22 April

Abstract: Drop the word ‘woke’ and discussion erupts. What once began as a call to address social injustices now - rightly or wrongly - conjures up images of ‘cancel culture’ and hypersensitive identity politics. To many, it seems like a phenomenon that takes place mainly within Amsterdam's canal belt, far away from the Frisian countryside. But Indira van der Zande and Friso Timmenga see it differently. They believe that ‘woke’ can be surprisingly relevant to Friesland, in particular. During this lecture, Indira and Friso delve deeper into the philosophical ideas behind ‘woke’. Together with the audience, they explore questions such as ‘How do you deal with cultural differences?’, ‘What role does the region play versus the city?’ and ‘Is knowledge always universal, or rather locally bound?’ All questions that, in short, we need to discuss precisely in Friesland!
