Out and about with your dog? Of course, you can wander through Leeuwarden's historic city centre together, turning into small cosy streets or taking a sunny stroll along the canals. But there is also plenty for you and your best friend to do outside the boundaries of the city centre. Run, trot and romp through the most beautiful nature areas, just a stone's throw away from the city centre. We have highlighted the best spots for you and your four-legged friend.

Het Rengerspark
Just outside the city centre, you'll find Rengerspark, a large, green city park with a beautiful pond in the middle. The park itself is not an off-leash area but at the back there is a fenced-in playing area where dogs can play, run, trot freely.

Groene Ster
The Groene Ster - also called the Lytste or Kleine Wielen - is a recreational area on the east side of Leeuwarden. You will find woods and hiking trails, as well as sunbathing meadows and beaches.

Froskepôlle
The Froskepôlle is a green oasis in Leeuwarden and heaven for dogs. This poldered island is only accessible via a bridge, and you are literally between town and country here. Most of the area is off-leash.

Potmarge
Going for nature but don't want to lose sight of the city? During a walk along the Potmarge, the Achmea Tower remains a fixed landmark. In the nature reserve, you'll find a few off-leash areas. These are indicated by the familiar posts.

Prinsentuin
Take a generous walk in the Prince Garden, the former pleasure garden of the Oranje-Nassau's. Especially in summer, you will experience the Prinsentuin at its most beautiful when the entire park is in bloom.

Sailing with your dog - ahoy!
Is your dog a real captain? In Leeuwarden, you can take your dog on a boat. In an electric sloop from Greenjoy, you and your four-legged friend will explore the canals by yourselves. Would you rather be shown around? Then join us on an authentic Frisian boat. These are flat-bottomed boats that farmers used to transport, for example, tools, cattle and hay. During the cruise, a guide will tell you the most interesting facts about the city. Please note! During the boat trip, you need to help your dog into the boat and onto the jetty yourself.
A special meeting - woof!
Did you know we had a big visit in Leeuwarden in 2018? In honour of Cultural Capital 2018, the Giants of Royal de Luxe came to visit Leeuwarden, and they brought their little dog with them. Or well, doggie? Just say big dog! This mechanical quadruped, Mexican naked dog Xolo, is 4.8 metres tall, 3.5 metres long and wags, plays, runs and barks. Xolo is a real traveller, because apart from Leeuwarden, he has already been to Guadalajara, Nantes, Liverpool, Montreal, and Villeurbanne!
