Liberation voyages

Guided tour

15 April until 5 May

Liberation voyages
A major event this year is the ‘liberation boat voyages’. The pram voyages actively contribute to the celebration that Leeuwarden was liberated 80 years ago this year. In the weeks after 15 April, the day of liberation, up to and including 5 May, the SPL, in collaboration with the Foundation Heritage and Public and ‘WeareGrutsk’ and made possible by the Municipality of Leeuwarden, organises special voyages, with the motto ‘Brege nei Frijheid’, in which the stories about Leeuwarden in wartime are the focal point. Special attention is given to the story of De Overval.

The story of Leeuwarden in wartime is told by guest speakers in the pram. The pram is adapted for these voyages and sails a slightly different route. The last bridge on this trip that we sail under is the Oosterbrug and has been adopted by the SPL these weeks as part of the aforementioned Brêge project. The bridge will be festively decorated with flags and banners for this occasion. The route ends at the House of Detention at the Blokhuispoort. Especially for the participants of these trips, the barge will moor in front of the infamous gate of the House of Detention where the spectacular liberation of 51 resistance fighters took place on 8 December 1944. The participants will enter the Hvb through the gate and can view the permanent exhibition of the Raid and get a guided tour.
