Leeuwarden has a historic city centre with canals and mounds (artificial hills) from the Middle Ages. Old storefronts and beautifully restored monuments adorn the city. Examples of this are the Oldehove, a large sloping tower and the Waag, an old weighing station in the middle of the city. A walk through the city centre is more than just a tour of old buildings. The city has special canals and narrow streets, cosy shops and interesting museums. If you look at a map from 1603, you can still recognize almost every street, every square, every canal and every building. In the 20th century, several canals were filled and turned into streets. Fortunately, the character of the streets around these old canals has been preserved. A day strolling through the streets of the capital of the province of Friesland has many highlights. Become acquainted with the past as well as the present.
