150 years of Mata Hari
This summer, we are celebrating a truly special party in Leeuwarden: the 150th birthday of the Leeuwarden-born Margaretha Zelle, better known as Mata Hari. The world-famous femme fatale mastered the art of seduction and, in the early 20th century, used her charm and intelligence to gain access to the highest political and military circles. But she was much more than just a seductive, mysterious woman who knew how to use her beauty cleverly. Mata Hari made her own rules. On August 7, 2026, it will be exactly 150 years since Mata Hari was born. And those celebrating a birthday treat others. So, Leeuwarden is celebrating her birthday in grand style this summer! From May 23 to August 7, 2026, the city will be dedicated to the lady whose name went around the world, and who remains Leeuwarden's most famous and intriguing resident ever.
Oldehove glow-up
She is covered in scaffolding from top to bottom, and not without reason: the Oldehove is getting a real glow-up! Our leaning tower has stood for nearly 500 years and is in need of new fillers. Every fine line is being taken care of. It is a pity that she has temporarily disappeared behind a structure of pipes and tarpaulins. But don't worry! She is open for maintenance. There is a great program to attend at the Oldehove all year round. From stargazing with the Natural History Museum to live music, and from poetry evenings to dinners in the sky: nothing is too crazy. In addition, the Oldehove is open every day and you can go to the top for just £1. A bargain!
